I BELIEVE IN WORDS

In the power they hold and the ripples of change they can create.

In this new age of technology, I see an evolution in the discourse of language. Communication has been reduced and condensed into packaged symbols containing loaded meanings. My generation is creating its’ own rhetoric of detached cyber socializing.

I fear words are being deleted out of the public sphere. Texting and online chatting have taken on a new form of nonverbal behavior. The sign “…” can express disagreement, agitation, or worry. We are losing our fundamental ability to converse with one another, to articulate our feelings with reason absent of illuminated screens that blur our rational judgment.

In a time of progress, I see a regression that is hindering the potential of language. A speech, book, letter, poem, or simple string of words can redefine a country, a relationship, or one’s own perspective.

Words are limitless. They are the single most powerful devices we can channel for extraordinary use. I believe in their possibilities, known and unknown, which still hold true to those who seek their magic.

This I believe.
